Mechanicus and dark mechanicum? Empty Mechanicus and dark mechanicum?

So apart from one being chaotic and evil how do they differ from one another. Did the dark mechanicum steal tech? Or did it start all over again? Are they equal in power and size?

Also if an STC was found the mechanicus would destroy imperial worlds to acquire it is this also true of its counterpart?

The main differentiation is that one follows credo Omnissiah, and the other doesn't.
The secondary differentiation is that one keeps to the sacred templates, and the other explores new avenues of knowledge and invents things.
Being good or evil... that's not somehing that applies in this universe. Razz

The Dark Mechanicum started as common Mechanicum, before Horus Heresy, so they started at aproximately same level of technology. Since then Mechanicum lost a crapton of echnology and rediscovered some, and Dark Mechanicum invented/discovered/stole a lot and went crazy. So the tech level remained pretty similar. Very Happy

They are not equal in power or size. Simply because we have nothing close to Dark Mechanicum power or size measures to compare with. It's pure chaos there. They can invent world killing machines one day, and a toothbrush the other.

If an STC is found, Imperium and Chaos will mount crusades that will pacify/crush the sector to acquire it if that should proove necessary. It happened during Auretian technocracy war right before Horus Heresy, and at Panacea wars.

I would not say that they are on same technological level. Dark mechanicus received very good quality Standart Construction Template as a gift from Horus. Furthermore, you can see Dark Mechanicus being more advanced in its dreaded techno-magickal constructs. Most recent of which is Planet Killer of course. First ever super battleship class constructed, feat before never achieved by mankind possibly even in dark age of technology.

All is not roses and candy of course. Dark mechanicus is notoriously poor at maintaining more mundane technology. From lasrifles to main battle tanks. Also, quality control and technological sophistication is...more chaotic across dark mechanicus. This is because they are more separated and independent now than ever. This is why one forge world will have widely different sophistication levels compared to their peers.

In conclusion, Dark mechanicus is more eager to exterminate with more exotic weaponary while mechanicus is more focused on more mundane equipment from batteries for a lasgun to maintaining technology for dreadnoughts and terminator armor.
